Reflecting on 2018 with North Spore
As we embark on a new year, it's important to take a moment to reflect on the milestones and achievements of the past. For North Spore, 2018 was a year filled with growth, success, and exciting new ventures. Join us as we look back on some of our favorite highlights that made 2018 a truly memorable year.
1. A Successful Spawn Season
Our first spawn season with an updated online store was a major success. We sent out hundreds of sawdust spawn and plug spawn bags to mushroom enthusiasts, gearing up for an even bigger season ahead. It was a true testament to the growing interest in mushroom cultivation and the impact of our products.
2. Small Business Pitch Competition Wins
One of our founders, Eliah, showcased North Spore's vision and passion in two different small business pitch competitions and emerged victorious in both. With winnings totaling $150,000, we were able to invest in equipment to expand our production and make it more efficient, setting the stage for further growth and innovation.
3. Bountiful Wild Mushroom Harvest
Maine experienced one of its most bountiful wild mushroom years in recent memory, allowing us to showcase fresh, locally foraged mushrooms at farmers markets and to talented chefs. The abundance of mushrooms was met with equal excitement from foragers and enthusiasts alike, setting the stage for future harvests.
4. Expansion of Educational Programming
We significantly expanded our educational offerings by leading mushroom foraging classes in the woods of Maine. These classes not only taught sustainable foraging techniques and mushroom identification but also fostered a community of mushroom enthusiasts eager to learn and engage with the mycological world.
5. Common Ground Country Fair
Participating in the Common Ground Country Fair remains a highlight of our year, as we interact with like-minded individuals who share our passion for small farms and sustainable practices. It's a time for us to connect with our customers, hear their stories, and see firsthand how our products are making a difference in their mushroom cultivation projects.
6. Holiday Rush and New Hires
The busiest months of the year were November and December, with a surge in holiday orders that kept our team busy fulfilling mushroom gift packages. To meet the demand, we added five new members to our staff, bringing fresh perspectives and ideas to propel North Spore forward in the new year.
7. A Thank You to Our Supporters
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our customers and supporters who have been integral to our success in 2018. Your continued belief in our mission drives us to innovate, grow, and contribute to the mycological community. Cheers to a fantastic new year ahead!
